Catalogue Details

The painting of the Iron Pot, Yacht,(Steamer) is a very rare Forrest in that it depicts a steam or modern vessel, alongside the yacht. Also that it shows the Iron Pot in its original colours.
We have also included some of the history relating to the Iron Pot, which suggests that the work may have been completed 1881-1885. See notes below.
Historical Reference. The Iron Pot was first named in 1816 by James Kelly. The original structure was built 1832, with a two storey house added 1885 to home Irishman James Parkinson and his large family. The structure stood on the island between 1885 and 1921. The light was automated in 1921.
We have received confirmation from the Maritime Museum of Tasmania that the painting shows the Iron Pot in its original colours, and that the green steamer was from the Union Shipping Co. of NZ Pty Ltd. This company was established 1875 and in 1891 bought out the Tasmanian Steam Navigation Company.
Haughton Forrest first arrived Tasmania in 1876 and established residence on a land grant at Sorrell, moving to Hobart in 1881.
