Catalogue Details

Lilly’s younger sister Eva Mary returned to Hobart in 1925 after their Mother’s death. She lived with Lily in the late 1930’s in the apartment in the APM Building, but also had a house at Kingston, where Lily spent considerable time.

In 1935 Lilly had an exhibition at her studio 53 Collins Street, Hobart comprising 60 watercolours, portraits and prints. 1935 was also a very significant year for Lilly as in October, aged seventy-five, she began a new venture establishing a commercial studio to produce relief prints. Her partner was young artist, Elizabeth (Betty) Hood, who had studied in London and also Hobart Technical College under Lucien Dechaineux and Mildred Lovett. The Bolt Press opened at 64 Collins Street, allowing her further scope for her black and white works, lithography and the coloured lino prints which required multiple blocks and fine registration to complete the final print.
