Charles Hancock (around 1800 – 30 July 1877) was a British painter of animals, specializing in equestrian sporting scenes. Between the years 1819 and 1847 he exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts twenty-three works which shows his proclivities for this genre. Also exhibiting British Institute and Suffolk Street institutions. Between 1835 and 1843 he was particularly commissioned to paint Derby and St Leger winners.

Apart from London he lived some 10 years in country localities where especially equestrian sports and connections with landed gentry.

Charles Hancock, British painter, working mostly with scenes of animals and equestrian sporting scenes. Featuring work at the Royal Academy of Arts in the early 19 th century, exhibiting a total of 23 works at the Royal Academy between 1819 – 1847. Studied under James Stark after moving to Norwich in 1820.

In this work, Arthur Kinniard, 10 th Lord Kinniard (Second from left), a Scottish Banker and Liberal politician. Known for his desire to improve Scotland’s representation in Parliament, and for his involvement in many philanthropic projects including women’s suffrage and relief to the Scottish poor. He was a keen farmer with cattle at Millhill Farm at Inchture. The large painting of Lord Kinnaird and Richard Williams depicts deerstalking in the neighbouring highlands and is perhaps the final painting of this smaller version that we are presenting in this auction.

His son, Arthur Kinniard, 11 th Lord Kinniard, was an early football star, widely regarded as the first star of the sport, and first President of the Football Association. Holding many records, even to this day with his 9 FA Cup Final appearances.
