Joe Rose
Born in Germany 1915, Rose arrived in Australia 1957. During WWII he escaped from a German Concentration Camp, fled to Britain and later served in the British Army. His paintings reflect the influence of the German Expressionists and Surrealists and often have dark morbid themes.
Exhibited numerous solo exhibitions, including Macquarie Galleries, Melbourne, London, Paris, and New York. Finalist in the Art Gallery of NSW Archibald Prize in 1962, 1963, Wynne, Sulman, Blake, and Robin Hood.
1971 Lived and worked in London, awarded British Empire Medal (B.E.M.)
1990 returned to Hobart.
