Catalogue Details

Charlene is from the 3rd generation of Indigenous artists, growing up at Warmun Community, Turkey Creek, Western Australia. She started painting at an early age, her parents, Churchill Cann, and Sade Carrington being early influences, as well as having painted with Queenie McKenzie, ‘Kangayi’ (Grandmother) Betty Carrington, Jack Britten, Rover Thomas, and many of the senior Warmun artists.

Charlene has a strong sense of country, demonstrating an ability to experiment and extend the boundaries of her chosen medium – natural ochre on canvas. This work from 2004 illustrates her working with materials used as binders for ochre, incorporating garliwan (bush resin) and other natural pigments, such as crushed leaf extracts in her works.
