Catalogue Details

Australian watercolour artist who specialised in painting the images of an almost forgotten outback life, old mine workings, abandoned ghost towns, decaying farm buildings. He became a professional painter at 39 after giving up his job as Snr Instructor at the Caulfield Institute of Technology in 1977. Elected Royal Society of Watercolour Painters 1982, awarded Order of Australia 1987. Hard working romantic, melancholy.

Born in 1918 of Norwegian and Spanish parents, Leon William Hanson studied privately. He painted full time since World War II, holding exhibitions in all state capitals.

Catalogue Details

Tasmanian painter well known for portrait, natural history and landscape. Studied under Jack Carrington Smith and Dorothy Stoner and Royal Academy Schools, London. Awarded commission to interpret Tasmania’s islands through drawing and painting 1976, including Macquarie, Goose, Fisher and Albatross. This resulted in drawings, etchings and oil works over many years.

Catalogue Details

Born in Sydney in 1911, Max Dupain studied art in Sydney before working in a commercial photography studio. He opened his own studio in Sydney in 1934, and was holding solo exhibitions from 1930 in Australia and overseas. During World War II he was a camouflage officer in the RAAF, and later became a photographer with the Department of Information. He returned to his photographic career after the war, his focus spanning such fields as portraiture, landscape and architecture. This is one of 3 known Hobart images taken at the time, including the newly completed Wrest Point Casino.
